A Funeral Service for Max S. Whetstine will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Republican City, Nebraska with Pastor Seong Lee officiating. Interment will follow at the Republican City Cemetery.

Max Whetstine, 88 years of age, of Republican City, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. Max was born on January 28, 1934, in Missouri and was soon adopted by Sherm and Ruth (Woods) Whetstine. He received his education from the Naponee Public School, graduating from the old Republican City High School.

On February 18, 1955, Max was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Voigt at the Methodist Parsonage in Republican City. This union was blessed with three children: Keith LeRoy, Theresa Lou, and Kevin Max. He farmed until the Harlan County Lake was formed and his farm ground was flooded out. Max then worked construction in many towns across Nebraska and later at the gas company for over 40 years while starting his own business, Whetstine Plumbing and Ditching. Through it all the family maintained their residence in Republican City. In 2006, Shirley preceded him in death.

Max enjoyed fishing, making weekly trips to Menards, and dancing to polka and country music. Every week he made a batch of homemade ice cream. Max liked to get away to Branson, Missouri and when his granddaughter told him to bring back a boat, he did just that. He loved spending time with his family and he always had m&m's in his pocket for the grandkids and great-grandkids. Max attended the United Methodist Church in Republican City.

Besides his parents and wife, Shirley, Max was preceded in death by; a half-brother, Don Whetstine; four brothers-in-law: Frank Voigt; Darold Voigt; Lloyd Voigt; and Dale Voigt; and sister-in-law; Betty Lou Gibbs and her husband, Norman.

Max leaves to celebrate his life; his daughter, Theresa Metzger of Alma; two sons: Keith Whetstine and his wife, Kathy of Republican City; and Kevin Whetstine and his wife, Chandra of Kearney, Nebraska; 11 grandchildren: April Engel; Brittany Artz; Chad Whetstine and his wife, Carli; Drew Whetstine; Becky Wolfe and her husband, Brad; Kali Schoff and her husband, Kyle; Gage Whetstine; Preston Corfield; Cody Gutierrez and his wife, Estefani; Cole Gutierrez; and Matteya Gutierrez; 10 great-grandchildren: Ethan Engel; Kason and Kohen Artz; Alexis and Madison Wolfe; Kamden, Colby, Cael, and Kash Schoff; and Jesse Gutierrez; along with nieces and nephews, and extended family.
