Maynard John Dunse, 90 years of age, of Minden, Nebraska, formerly of rural Huntley, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the Bethany Home in Minden. Maynard was born in Franklin County, Nebraska, on the family farm near Wilcox, on November 6, 1931, the eldest of six children, born to Phillip and Marie (Pageler) Dunse. He was baptized on December 1, 1931, at his parent's home, and was later confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, north of Republican City. He received his education from Huntley Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1949.
Following his education, Maynard continued farming with his father. He helped with building the Harlan County Dam from 1950-51, driving a Euclid truck, hauling dirt. Maynard was drafted into the United States Marines Corps on May 15, 1952. He served as a Radio Telegraph Operator during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on April 26, 1954. Maynard returned to Nebraska and continued farming near Huntley, and was able to purchase the neighboring farm adjacent to his parents, in 1955.
On February 10, 1957, Maynard was united in marriage to Roberta Burkey at the Methodist Church in Loomis, Nebraska and this union was blessed with one daughter, Diane. Together, the family engaged in farming and Maynard enjoyed the labors of the land, until his complete retirement in 2015/2016. The couple would have celebrated their 65 th Wedding Anniversary later this month.
Besides his passion for farming, Maynard thoroughly loved attending his grandchildren's activities and coffeeing with friends in Huntley. Most of all, Maynard was a family man who treasured time spent with his family. He was an active and devoted member for the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Republican City and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Maynard was also very proud to have been a charter member of the Huntley Lions Club, starting in April of 1969.
In June 2015, Maynard and Roberta participated in the Korean War Hero Flight. It was a very memorable and touching event for the recognition they received throughout the event.
Maynard was preceded in death by: his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and June Burkey; one granddaughter, Tasha Keiter; one great-granddaughter, Willow Keiter; five brothers-in-law: Bob Osterlund; Leon Kreiner; Larry Burkey; Bob Acker; and Ron Anderson; and one sister-in-law, Dot Stehl and her husband, Lloyd.
Maynard leaves to celebrate his life; his wife, Roberta of Kearney; his daughter, Diane Keiter and her husband, David of Kearney; two grandsons: Ryan Keiter of Kearney; and Michael Keiter and his wife, Serah of Jerico Springs, Missouri; four great-grandchildren, plus one on the way: Elizabella, Elyott, Jethro, and Olive; three sisters: Isla Kreiner of Winter Springs, Florida; Phyllis Osterlund of Salem, Oregon; and Rhonda Cope and her husband, Glen of Liberty, Missouri; two brothers: Allen Dunse and his wife, Missy of Ocala, Florida; and Gary Dunse and his wife, Theresa of Huntley; Roberta's siblings: Susan Anderson of Solon, Iowa; Peggy Kahler (Lynn Otto) of Arapahoe, Nebraska; Bill Burkey (Jan Lindgren) of Lincoln, Nebraska; Marilyn Burkholder and her husband, Jim of Loomis, Nebraska; Beverly Binning and her husband, Dave of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Mary Acker of Edgerton, Missouri; and Brian Burkey of Lincoln; along with a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
