A funeral service for Norma Hanes will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma, Nebraska with Pastors Jay Brandon and Daren Popple, officiating. Interment will follow at the Alma Cemetery.
Norma Lea (Romjue) Hanes was born May 19, 1925, second oldest of five children to Roy and Nina (Norton) Romjue. She departed this life on Friday, June 23, 2023, in Holdrege, Nebraska, at the age of 98 years.
Norma attended her first three years of school at Crow School in Phillips County, Kansas. In 1934, the family moved to a farm north of Long Island, Kansas and she attended Spring Brook School in Harlan County, Nebraska. Following her 8th grade graduation, she attended high school in Long Island, graduating in 1943.
In the summer of 1943, she moved to Alma and worked for Meyers Café and attended the Congregational Church, where she met Francis Hanes. Through the church, they took a correspondence course together from Moody Bible Institute, and she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ, into her heart in November 1943.
Norma and Francis were married February 11, 1944, in Phillipsburg, Kansas. To this union four children were born: Raymond Lee, Doris Ann, Paul Ivan, and Diane Lynn. The couple made their first home north of Alma, where Norma cleaned house for anyone that needed her. In 1945, they purchased a home nine miles south of Naponee, Nebraska (in Kansas). In 1948, they purchased their home south of Republican City, where they lived for 19 years and Norma continued to live, after Francis' unexpected death in 1967.
Norma loved farm life and continued to farm with her sons, Raymond and Paul. Norma loved to drive her truck and she hauled many bushels of grain. With the help of her younger children, Norma milked cows and sold cream and eggs. During these years, she attended, "Sod" or Pleasant Ridge Church in the community, until it closed. As the children finished school, married, and started homes of their own, Norma retired from milking and most of the farm work in 1985, but continued to haul grain and give Raymond a hand, as needed. She retired from truck driving at the age of 82.
Norma enjoyed sewing and spent many hours at her sewing machine, making clothes, mending and making quilts, many of which she gave away. Norma enjoyed her grandchildren's visits and cared for them when asked to do so.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis in 1967; son, Paul in 1972; an infant brother in 1924; son-in-law, Myron Bice; in-law's: Floyd and Vera Hanes; sister, Della Sell and her husband, Bill; brother, Dale Romjue; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Mulder.
Norma leaves to mourn her passing: her son, Raymond Hanes and wife, SarahJayne of Phillipsburg, Kansas; two daughters: Doris Fogle and husband, Leon of Holdrege; and Diane Lang and husband, Terry of Wichita, Kansas; sister, Alta Mulder of Alma; sister-in-law, Bernita Romjue of Republican City; 12 grandchildren: Lisa Capps; Leroy (Siobhan) Hanes; Jared (Meaghan) Hanes; John (Kara) Yeaman; Mike (Kathy) Fogle; Karyn (Eric Lawrence); Kimberly Fogle; Matt Jarvis; Jennifer (Will Keesee); Jeff (Emily) Jarvis; Jordan (Branden); and Shania Lang; 27 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.
