Funeral Services for Norma J. Langenberg will be conducted from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertrand, Nebraska on Monday, May 4, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastors Dale Hedstrom and Kenton Birtell officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Bertrand.
Norma June Langenberg, 91 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska, formerly of Bertrand, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. Norma was born October 11, 1923 in rural Smithfield, Nebraska, the fourth of six children born to Thomas L. and Lillian Fleetwood (Hibbs) Way. The family moved to a farm one mile east of Smithfield where she attended beginner class in the Smithfield School for six months. They then moved seven miles south of Smithfield where she attended the Fanter Union School also called the Detenbeck School through 8 th grade. Following her education, Norma was hired by many families to help with newborn babies, their siblings and to do household chores.
On October 18, 1944, Norma was united in marriage to Albert Fritz Langenberg in Norton, Kansas and to this union four children were born: Larry, Bryce and twins: Connie and Donnie. The family made their home south of Bertrand. In March of 1947, they purchased a farm five miles south of Holdrege living there until moving to Bertrand in April of 1957. Through the years Norma was employed in the Bertrand school cafeteria, the Brewster Hospital in Holdrege, Sandstrom's Variety Store in Bertrand and was a custodian for the Bertrand School until retiring in May of 1986.
Norma was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertrand. She took adult instruction becoming a member and was baptized in 1951.
During her earlier retirement years she kept herself busy at her son's and later grandson's convenience store washing windows and cleaning. She loved doing crafts, making jellies, and having coffee while visiting with friends at the convenience store. She treasured times riding in the country with her husband looking at the crops and enjoying the deer wandering around. The time she shared with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was so special to her. They brought her so much joy making her face light up.
In February 2009, Norma and Albert began to make their home at the Chrisoma Villa Assisted Living in Holdrege. Albert passed away on March 21, 2012. On August 2, 2012, after a fall fracturing her leg, Norma moved to the Christian Homes Care Community.
Besides her parents and husband, Albert, Norma was preceded in death by; four brothers: JerryWay, Orien "Hank" Way, Keith Way and Kenneth Way; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Norma leaves to mourn her passing; her children: Larry Langenberg and his wife, Joyce of Bertrand, Bryce Langenberg of Bertrand, Don Langenberg and his wife, Cheryl of Holdrege, Connie Dodson and her husband, Jerry of Holdrege; six grandchildren: Shawn Dodson and his wife, Carolyn of Bertrand, Kevin Dodson and his wife, Molly of Olathe, Kansas, Angie Kibbon and her husband, Randy of Portland, Texas, Matthew Langenberg of Bertrand, Michael Langenberg and his wife, Jessica of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Brett Langenberg of Atlanta, Georgia; one step-grandson, Shawn Peterson of Fountain, Colorado; seven great-grandchildren: Ellery and Reid Langenberg, Garrett, Brandon, Kaylee and Halle Dodson, Harlow Kibbon; two step great-grandchildren: Ashley and Cody Peterson; one sister, Shirley Robb and her husband, Gary of Kearney, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Langenberg and Agnes Langenberg both of Holdrege; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand, Nebraska on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 1:00 p.m. -2:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in Norma's honor and kindly suggested to the Young at Heart Senior Center in Bertrand or St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertrand.
