Norma Jean Mayo, 87 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Norma was born March 10, 1931 at Huntley, Nebraska, the second of four children born to Harry and Violet (Keehl) Keslar. She received her education from Edison Public School, and graduated from Edison High School with the class of 1948.
Following her education, Norma was united in marriage to Vernon Lee "Red" Mayo on November 24, 1948 and to this union eight children were born: Terry, Susan, Linda, Gary, Nancy, Larry, Ron, and Pam. The family made their home in Oxford, Nebraska, before settling to Beaver City, Nebraska. In 1955, they moved to Holdrege, where Norma was employed as a nurse's aide at Holdrege Memorial Homes for twenty-two years until her retirement. On January 2, 1986, she was preceded in death by her husband, Red.
Being an avid NASCAR fan, the entire family knew not to call during a race. She also loved crossword puzzles, reading, was a wonderful cook, and early in years thoroughly enjoyed camping and fishing with the family. Her sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew her. Spending time with her large family was truly what she lived for!
Besides her husband, Red, and her parents; Norma was preceded in death by two sons: Terry and Gary; and two brothers: Lloyd and Donald Keslar.
She leaves to celebrate her life; her two sons: Larry Mayo of Holdrege; and Ron Mayo and his special friend, Linda of Holdrege; four daughters: Susan Remmenga of Bertrand, Nebraska; Linda Swearingen and her husband, Clyde of Grand Island, Nebraska; Nancy Elting and her husband, Doug of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Pam Joy of Holdrege; daughter-in-law, Cindy Mayo of Funk; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Donna Handrick of Tonganoxie, Kansas; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
