Phyllis Grace (Holen) Silverberg, 87 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 6, 2024, following a long stay in the Holdrege hospital and in the care of hospice. Phyllis was born on October 10, 1936, in Holdrege, the middle of three children born to Floyd and Grace (Anderson) Holen. She was raised on a farm north of Bertrand, Nebraska, and received her primary education from Ash Grove School, and graduated from Bertrand High School with the class of 1954. Phyllis pursued higher education at Luther Junior College in Wahoo, Nebraska. She then taught 4th grade in Axtell, Nebraska for three years.
On August 2, 1958, Phyllis was united in marriage to Norris Silverberg at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand. The couple lived in Hastings and Elm Creek, Nebraska, prior to moving to Holdrege in 1968.
Phyllis then began working for Holdrege Public Schools, in food services for the next 32 years. She retired in 2001. Phyllis loved caring for and attending her children's and grandchildren's activities. She also loved music and surrounded herself with it, wherever she was.
Phyllis was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand. She later became an active member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School, attending women's Bible studies, and singing in the choir for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marlys (Holen) Nelson and husband, Ron; and a brother, Kent Holen.
Phyllis leaves to celebrate her life: her husband of 65 years, Norris Silverberg of Holdrege; daughter, Ann Larson and husband, Jim of Papillion, Nebraska; and son, Gregg Silverberg of Lincoln, Nebraska; two grandchildren: Mark Larson and wife, Ashley of Lincoln; and Bethany (Larson) Schlegel and husband, Greg of Grand Island, Nebraska; five great-grandchildren: Lily, Sam, and Liam Larson; and Lucy and Levi Schlegel; brother-in-law, Richard Silverberg and wife, Betty of Columbus, Nebraska; along with nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many friends.
A memorial book signing and family greeting will be held prior to the services from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church.
It was Phyllis's desire that no flowers be given; but that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be given in her honor to the Bethel Lutheran Church. "The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God stands forever." Isaiah 40:8.
Expressions of caring and kindness can be sent to the family at www.nelsonbauerfh.com
