Funeral Services for Phyllis M. Tucker will be conducted from the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with Mr. Wayne Carlson, officiating. Interment will be in the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska.

Phyllis Mae Tucker, 84 years of age, of Holdrege (formerly of Bertrand) passed away on Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Phyllis was born December 11, 1926 in Bertrand, one of six children of Ray and Harriet (Walters) Detenbeck. Phyllis received her education from Bertrand, graduating from Bertrand High School with the class of 1944. After graduation she moved to Hastings, Nebraska, where she was employed as a bookkeeper.

On November 22, 1946 she was united in marriage to Dick Johnston and to this union one son, Michael J. Johnston was born. The family made their home in Hastings.

On May 15, 1954 she was united in marriage to USMC Staff Sergeant Nelson A. Tucker at New Philadelphia, Ohio. They were stationed in Hastings, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Subic Bay, Philippines and Camp Pendleton, California. Phyllis was baptized in the Unity Church in 1964 in Vista, California. In 1972, Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson in a drowning accident.

Phyllis returned to Nebraska and was employed by Robinson Motors as a bookkeeper. While in Holdrege, she attended the First United Methodist Church.

She loved to travel, and gardening, especially tending to her flowers. She also enjoyed collecting rocks, and playing puzzles and games.

Besides her parents and husband, Phyllis was preceded in death by her two brothers: Archie Detenbeck and his wife, Mona and Keith Detenbeck; three sisters: Beulah Dawson, Doris Biesecker and her husband, Leroy, and Barb Ford; and one brother-in-law, George Dawson.

She leaves to mourn her passing her son, Michael Johnston and his wife, Yvonne of Grand Island, Nebraska; three granddaughters: Melinda Slattery, Michaela and Michelle Johnston; one great-grandson, Connor; sister-in-law, Dorothy Detenbeck of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Jack Ford of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in her memory and kindly suggested to the Gideons International.
