Mass of Christian Burial for Regina I. Sayler will be conducted from the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Thomas Lux, officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.
Regina Irene "Genie" Sayler, 88 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Regina was born January 16, 1923 at Castle Rock, Colorado, the second of seven children of Simon H. and Irene E. (Coressel) Flierl. Genie received her education at Parker, Colorado, graduating from Parker High School with the class of 1941. Following her education, during WW II, Genie worked in the war industry at the Ammunition Depot.
On March 1, 1947, Genie was united in marriage to Joy C. Sayler, the couple was blessed with two children they adopted: Christopher and Theresa. The family made their home in Denver, Colorado, Borger, Texas, and Florence, Colorado before settling to Holdrege. Genie was employed by J.C. Penney in Denver for 10 years and then focused on raising their children. Later she was employed by the Brewster Clinic in Holdrege as a bookkeeper for 10 years and then served as the bookkeeper for Vernon Nelson and Son's Feedlot for 12 years until her retirement.
She was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, where Genie was a member of the Altar Society, involved in Bible study, taught CCD for several years as the children grew up, and was a member of the Legion of Mary since 1975. Genie had a deep devotion to music and shared her talents as an organist since she was 12 years of age, including church organist at All Saints Catholic Church since 1959. She was also a member of the Mothers Club and the Lions Club. Her hobbies included cross stitch, playing the piano, cooking and baking and tending to her flowers in her rose and rock gardens. Genie also enjoyed volunteering delivering Meals-On-Wheels for several years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Theresa Marie Sayler in 2006; and husband, Joy on February 20, 2010. She leaves to mourn her passing her son, Chris Sayler of Atlanta, Georgia; three grandchildren: Angela Marie Sayler of Olathe, Kansas, Jenifer Burris of Clay Center, Nebraska, and Kyle Sayler and his wife, Michaela of Auburn, Nebraska; four great-grandchildren: Zosha, Owen, Anna and Raegan; three brothers: Francis Flierl of Englewood, Colorado, Joseph Flierl and his wife, Polly of Littleton, Colorado, and Charles Flierl and his wife, Beverly of Denver; three sisters: Helen Bissett of Littleton, Evelyn Loyd and her husband, Ernie of Grover, Colorado and Ruth Marie Callahan and her husband, Bill of Greeley, Colorado; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 25, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege with the Wake Service being held at 7:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established in her memory and kindly suggested to the church for Mass Offerings or to the Phelps County Community Foundation-Scholarships.
