Memorial services for Richard C. Earsom will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska, with Pastor Dan Wiese officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge, Nebraska, at 2:30 p.m. with Military Honors provided by the Cambridge American Legion Post #199 in conjunction with the Offutt Air Force Base Military Funeral Honors Team.
Richard "Dick" Clair Earsom, 86 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at his home. Dick was born March 28, 1931, in Cambridge, the youngest of five children born to John William and Iona (Hickerson) Earsom.
Dick received his education from Cambridge Public Schools, and graduated with the class of 1949. He was inducted into the United States Air Force in 1949, served during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1953.
On July 18, 1954, he was united in marriage to Nila Mae Buss at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Hill, Nebraska, and to this union three children were born: Jane, David, and Eric. Dick and Nila built their family home in Holdrege, where Dick worked as a Clerk for Burlington Northern Railroad for 43 years. He retired in 1993, and farmed with his son, David.
Dick was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith on December 12, 1954, at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook, Nebraska. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church for 63 years. He was a long-time member of the American Legion and Experimental Aircraft Association. Dick enjoyed flying, airplanes, fishing, and making homemade ice cream for family gatherings. He was an avid football fan, cheering for the Dusters, Loomis Wolves, Huskers, Bears, and Packers. Dick and Nila also enjoyed wintering in Apache Junction, Arizona with his sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Garth Clark, and many other friends.
In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his wife, Nila in 2004; granddaughter, Rebekah Burbank; brother, Bill Earsom; and three sisters: Norma Jean Barron, Virginia Nider and Donna Clark.
Dick leaves his legacy to family and friends; his children: Jane Burbank and her husband, Dale of Gillette, Wyoming, David Earsom and his wife, Kristie of Loomis, Nebraska and Eric Earsom of San Francisco, California; five grandchildren: Ellen Burbank of Torrington, Wyoming, Anna Burbank of Gillette, Wyoming, Brittany Hanson and her husband, Matthew of Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska, Emily Wittenhagen and her husband, Matthew of Holdrege, and Joshua Earsom and his wife, Jenna of Loomis; six great-grandchildren: Matthew Mannon; Calli, Gracelyn, and Hadley Hanson; Charlotte "Charley" and Drake Wittenhagen; and other relatives and many friends.
Memorial Book signing will be held on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Dick's honor and will be designated at a later date.
