Celebration of Life Graveside Services for Richard R. Gienau will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Alma Cemetery at Alma, Nebraska with Pastor Larry Doubet officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Fay Cady American Legion Post #118 of Alma in conjunction with the United States Army Funeral Honors Team.
Richard Russell "Rich" Gienau, 89 years of age, of Alma, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, Nebraska from pneumonia and Alzheimer's. Rich was born on June 4, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, the youngest of three children born to Roy and Arlie (Hibner) Gienau. He received his education in Chicago, and graduated high school.
In 1953, Rich was inducted into the United States Army, and served his country as a Military Policeman during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1956.
Upon returning home, Rich worked as an Engineer for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. In 1966, he was united in marriage to Barbara Krueger, and to this union two sons were born: Russell Richard and Paul Richard. The couple later divorced.
Rich spent most of his life in Berwyn, Illinois, and after his retirement, he lived in Clancy, Montana, Grants Pass, Oregon, and then settled in Alma in 2004. For the past year, he made his home at the Country House Residence in Kearney.
In his younger years, Rich enjoyed camping, hunting, four-wheeling, and riding motorcycles. He especially loved his dog.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his; son, Russell; brother, Glenn Gienau and his wife, Ann; sister, Virginia Gienau; and nephew-in-law, Van Whitmire.
He leaves to celebrate his life; his son, Paul of Washington; two nieces: JoAnne Gienau Whitmire of Alma, and Patricia "Patty" Gienau Martinez of Homestead, Florida; two great nephews: Chris Whitmire and his wife, Gretchen of Kearney, Nebraska, and Mike Whitmire and his wife, Jessica of Elm Creek, Nebraska; great-great nieces and nephews: Kaidyn, Hannah, Kendall, Kaleb and Van; and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 16, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Monday, July 17, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.
A memorial has been established in Richard's honor and kindly suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.
