He was baptized at the Church of Our Lady Queen of Apostles in Heston, Middlesex, England.

As an Air Force brat, Rick was raised and educated in many locations throughout the United States and Germany. While in New York he developed a taste for winter sports such as skiing and hockey, both as a participant and as a spectator. In particular, Rick loved the Winter Olympics. His affinity for travel and the outdoors led him to encourage the family to adventure through skiing, cycling, sailing, camping, and road tripping, but he also loved traveling to other worlds in the pages of a good fantasy or science fiction book.
