Memorial Mass for Robert B. Hanson will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Smithfield, Nebraska with Father Thomas Lux as celebrant. Private family inurnment will be held prior to the Memorial Mass at the Highland Cemetery in Bertrand, Nebraska.

Robert Bernard Hanson, 87 years of age, of Lexington, Nebraska, (formerly of Smithfield) passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Plum Creek Healthcare Community in Lexington, Nebraska. Robert was born on July 4, 1926, in rural Smithfield, the youngest of three sons born to George and Mary (Fox) Hanson.

At a very young age, Robert took an interest in farming. He worked on the family farm for 83 years.

On December 29, 1953, Robert was united in marriage to Mary (Smith) Schaefer in Holdrege. Robert and Mary raised a daughter, Sandra.

Robert enjoyed traveling and going on road trips with his family and friends. He enjoyed making many memories with his wife Mary. Robert will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He loved his family and left a legacy of kindness, hard work and integrity. His sense of humor made everyone he came in contact with feel at ease.

Besides his parents, Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 1997, son-in-law, Donald Gordon; and brother, Lawrence Hanson.

Robert leaves to mourn his passing, his daughter, Sandra Gordon of Lexington; three grandsons: Don Gordon and his wife Sue, of San Diego, California, Tracy Gordon and his wife, Mori, of Lexington, and Jim Gordon of Phoenix, Arizona; four great-grandchildren: Jordan Krason of Phoenix, Arizona, Zach Gordon, Morissa Chee and her husband, Chaney, and Jacob Gordon all of Lexington; one great-great grandson, Zacoby Chee of Lexington; brother, Don Hanson and his wife Phyllis, of Smithfield; extended family: Pat Potter and her children: Dave, Dan, Barbara, Katie, Julie, and Laura; Gretchen Yerke of San Diego, CA, and Chris Yerke and his family of Boulder, CO; along with many special nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives and friends.


There will be no visitation and no rosary as the family is honoring his wish for cremation.
