Funeral Services for Roger L. Vollertsen will be held on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with Reverend Jeff Adams officiating. Burial will follow at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.

Roger Leroy Vollertsen, 68 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Roger was born on July 6, 1946 at Nebraska City, Nebraska, the eldest of two children born to Leroy F. and Phyllis D. (Goering) Vollertsen. He received his education from Nebraska City Public Schools in Nebraska City later graduating from Brock High School in Brock, Nebraska, with the class of 1965.

Roger enlisted in the United States Navy, but was medically discharged due to an eye disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa.

On April 6, 1969, he was united in marriage to Sheryl Sue Neujahr at the Methodist Church in Stromsburg, Nebraska. To this union, two children, Cathy and Rod were born. The family made their home in Nebraska City for 20 years, before making their home in Holdrege in 1990.

Roger enjoyed crossword puzzles and woodworking before his sight failed. He also enjoyed helping others and would drop everything to help them out. He was very patriotic and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, the Nebraska City Saddle Club and a fan of NASCAR and Big Red Football.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Don Hauptman; and his mother and father-in-law; along with many aunts and uncles.

He leaves to mourn his passing; his wife, Sheryl Vollertsen of Holdrege; one son, Rod of Holdrege; one daughter, Cathy Vollertsen and David Williams of Manhattan, Kansas; sister, Nancy Hauptman of Juniata, Nebraska; nephews: Matt and Tiffany Hauptman, Marshall, Lillian and Landon Hauptman; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in Roger's honor and kindly suggested to the Holdrege Rescue Squad.
