Memorial Services for Ronald H. Nelson will be conducted from the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Darrel Wissmann, officiating. Private family interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege prior to the services.
Ronald H. Nelson, 79 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2011 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Ronald was born October 10, 1931 at Lincoln, Nebraska, the second of three children born to Harry Bengt and Ebba Charlotte (Lush) Nelson. Ron received his primary education from Ceresco, Nebraska, graduating from Ceresco High School with the class of 1949. He then pursued higher education at Luther College at Wahoo, Nebraska for two years and then went on to Kearney State College, where he received his Bachelor's Degree and later a Master's Degree in Music. Following his education, Ron served his country in the United States Navy until his honorable discharge.
On June 28, 1959, he was united in marriage to Marlys Marie Holen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Axtell, where they both taught school prior to moving to Holdrege in 1962. While in Holdrege, Ron continued to teach Vocal Music until his retirement after over 30 years in the Holdrege Public School System. On March 26, 2008, Ron was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys.
Ron was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, where he was active in many capacities, was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Holdrege, and was a past member of the Nebraska Music Educators Association. He enjoyed singing in the Barber Shop Quartet and loved to hunt in his younger years.
He leaves to mourn his passing a brother, Jerry Nelson and his wife, Evon of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Phyllis Silverberg and her husband, Norris of Holdrege; brothers-in-law: Kent Holen of Holdrege and Gene Dahlgren of Fullerton, California; five nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Besides his wife, Marlys, he was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carol Dahlgren.
Ron will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Tuesday, January 18 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to Bethel Lutheran Church, Phelps County Community Foundation or The Tassel.
