Memorial Services for Roy B. "Bud" Johnson will be conducted from the Westmark Evangelical Free Church north of Loomis, Nebraska on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Rick Smith, officiating. The casket will be not be present at the church, private family interment will be at a later date.
Roy Burdette "Bud" Johnson, 88 years of Bertrand, Nebraska (formerly of Overton, Nebraska) passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at the Bertrand Nursing Home. Roy was born February 29, 1920 on the family farm, north of Bertrand in Phelps County, Nebraska, the third of four children of Carl and Nora (Nelson) Johnson. Bud received his primary education at District #2, the Riverview School in Phelps County through the eighth grade. He then graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1937.
Following his education, Bud was inducted into the United States Army on February 14, 1942. He served his country during WW II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater until his honorable discharge on November 10, 1945. Bud then returned home to Phelps County and was employed as a Carpenter for several years in Holdrege.
While he was in the service, Bud was united in marriage to Evelyn Lucille Johnson at Phillipsburg, Kansas and to this union four children were born: Pat, Richard, Kit and Rex. Bud and Evie engaged in farming south of Overton for thirty years until his retirement in 1982. After retirement, Bud was employed in maintenance at the Bertrand Nursing Home and the Burns Brothers Service Station at Overton.
Bud was a member of the Westmark Evangelical Free Church, where he served on the church board, ushered and was active on the building committee. He was also a member of the Bertrand V.F.W., loved to create latch hook rugs, and enjoyed tending to his garden and making stained glass.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Evie of Bertrand; one daughter, Pat Dunlap and her husband, David of Omaha, Nebraska; three sons: Richard Johnson and his wife, Bonnie of Half Moon Bay, California, Kit Johnson and his wife, Gloria of Loomis, Nebraska and Rex Johnson and his wife, Chris of Overton; seven grandchildren: Andrew Dunlap and his wife, Megan of Omaha, Aaron Dunlap and his wife, Amy of Omaha, Kaj Johnson and his wife, Sarah of Century City, California, Marc Johnson of Shanghai, China, Amanda, Ethan and Justin Johnson of Overton; two step-grandchildren: Michael Berumen and his wife, Sabrina of Aurora, Colorado and Julie Ann Robles and her husband, Jon of Lexington, Nebraska; three great-grandchildren: Emma and Aidan Dunlap and Adelia Dunlap; three step great-grandchildren: Linzie, Kylie and Jon Berumen; one brother, Alwyn Johnson and his wife, Dorothy of Kearney, Nebraska; one sister, Erma Kelly of Edina, Minnesota; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister in infancy; one brother, Morris Johnson; brother-in-law, Kerwood Kelly and sister-in-law, Jeanne Johnson.
Bud will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Friday, December 26, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to the Bertrand Nursing Home, the Overton Volunteer Fire and Rescue or donor's choice.
