Samuel Johnson "Sam" Carlson, age 90 of Holdrege, Nebraska, passed from this life to life eternal on Monday, March 14, 2011 at Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege. A memorial service to celebrate Sam's life will be held at Christian Homes Care Community Chapel in Holdrege on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with Chaplain DeWane Dow, officiating. The family is honoring Sam's wish to be cremated, there will be no visitation and there will be a private inurnment in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege prior to the memorial service.

Samuel Johnson Carlson was the middle child born to Carl and Mabel (Johnson) Carlson on October 20, 1920 in Holdrege. He attended school in Phelps County and graduated from Holdrege High School in 1938. Following high school, Sam was drafted into the U.S. Army.

Following a brief period when Sam lived in Denver, Colorado, he spent most of his life in Holdrege, where he worked for Holdrege Seed and Farm Supply, Farmland Co-op and Phelps County. He retired at age 62 after becoming legally blind.

In 1948, Sam married Zola Cudney; six months later, she was killed in a car accident. In 1961, he married Donna and adopted her three daughters: Linda, Carol and Teresa, as his own.

In his later years, Sam enjoyed cruising and went on several cruises with his wife and daughter and her family.

Sam was preceded in death by his first wife, Zola; his daughter, Carol Holcomb; his parents, Carl and Mabel Carlson; brothers: Clinton Carlson and Donald Carlson; sisters-in-law: Evelyn Carlson and Betty Schwartz; nephew, Ron Carlson; niece, Beverly Carlson; and brothers-in-law: Ron Hoff, Elmer Hoff and Rueben Schwartz.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna of Holdrege; two daughters: Linda Cason and her husband, Tom of Omaha, Nebraska, Teresa Archer of Beatrice, Nebraska; son-in-law, Charlie Holcomb of Caldwell, Idaho; 5 granddaughters; 1 grandson; 5 great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Johnson of Holdrege; one brother, Ralph Carlson and his wife, Margaret of Lincoln, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Delores "Babe" Carlson and Lorraine Carlson both of Holdrege, Elsie Hoff of Loveland, Colorado, Harriet Hoff of Ft. Collins, Colorado; and brother-in-law, Jim Hoff of Ft. Collins; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
