Sandra Jean "Sandy" Yochum, 75 years, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Mount Carmel Home in Kearney, Nebraska. She was born on October 10, 1950, in Princeton, Indiana, the eldest of four children born to Loren Calvin and Wilma Jean (Hussey) Gerrish. Sandy grew up in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, where she attended Belmont School and later Mt. Carmel High School, graduating with the Class of 1969.
On November 2, 1974, Sandy was united in marriage to William "Bill" Yochum in Mt. Carmel. Together, Sandy and Bill raised their family and shared over 50 years of marriage.
Throughout her life, Sandy devoted herself to her family as a homemaker. Over the years, Sandy also worked outside the home at several different places. While living in Illinois, she worked at a factory in Mt. Carmel, a nursing home in Monticello, and at the Walnut Street Diner in Mt. Carmel. In 1981, the family relocated to Holdrege and she was employed at Dollar General for 14 years.
Sandy enjoyed staying active and going for daily walks. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed the friendships and memories she made through the sport. She also enjoyed fill-in puzzles and iced tea. Sandy gave the best hugs. Above all, Sandy treasured her family, and her grandchildren held a very special place in her heart.
Sandy's faith was also an important part of her life, and she was a member of All Saints Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Loren Gerrish in 2014; and her brother, Kenny Gerrish in 2024.
She leaves to celebrate her life her husband, Bill Yochum; her children: Gregory Yochum and his wife, Nikki, of Kearney, Nebraska; Crystal Swearingen and her husband, Paul of Holdrege; and Jessica Ward and her husband, Isaac of Holdrege; 11 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; her mother, Wilma Gerrish of Mt. Carmel; two sisters: Jackie Ruble; and Trudy Trusty both of Mt. Carmel; sister-in-law, Sally Gerrish, of Georgia; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the family greeting friends at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege. Rosary will be recited beginning at 7:00 p.m.
