Funeral Services for Sara S. Olson will be conducted from the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend David Sites and Darrel Wissmann, PMA, officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.
Sara Signe Olson, 66 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2008 at the Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege. Sara was born October 4, 1942 at Omaha, Nebraska, the eldest of four children of Dr. Donald Brewster and Delia (Erickson) Brewster. She received her education at Holdrege, graduating from Holdrege High School with the class of 1960. She then pursued higher education at Stephens College in Missouri for a year before transferring to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where she received her Bachelors Degree in Speech Pathology.
On August 31, 1963 she was united in marriage to Roger D. Olson at Holdrege and to this union two children were born: Nancy and David. The family made their home east of Holdrege, where they engaged in farming and cattle feeding. Sara was employed for the Holdrege Public Schools for five years as a Speech Therapist and also actively involved in the family farming operation.
She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. Sara enjoyed her involvement in many community organizations including: member and past president of the Chapter H, P.E.O. in Holdrege, served as past president of the Phelps County Community Foundation, active with the Holdrege Community Concert Association, past member of the Holdrege Public Library Board, past member of the Phelps County Museum Board of Directors, past member of the Hospital Certificate of Need Review Committee and was also a member of the Nebraska Cattlewomen's Association.
Sara enjoyed tending to her yard and garden and most of all, loved spending time with her grandchildren.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Roger of Holdrege; one daughter, Nancy Garrelts and her husband, Todd of Holdrege; one son, David Olson of Holdrege; two grandchildren: Paige and Blake Garrelts of Holdrege; two sisters: Helen Ross and her husband, Bob of Issaquah, Washington and Jane Erickson and her husband, Ron of Rapid City, South Dakota; one brother, Charles Brewster and his wife, Lynn of Kearney, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Ed Olson and his wife, Judy of Holdrege and sister-in-law, Elaine Beedle and her husband, Jerry of Holdrege and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, Howard Church.
Sara will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Monday, December 1, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
