Sharon Lynn Johnson, 68 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2008 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. She was born March 30, 1940 at Holdrege, the eldest of five children of Dempsey and Doris (Glandon) McNiel. She received her education at Holdrege, graduating with the Holdrege High School with the class of 1957. She then pursued higher education at Kearney State College, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics in 1960. On August 23, 1960 she was united in marriage to William E. Johnson and to this union two sons were born: Brian William and Blake Edwin. Sharon then began teaching home economics at Loomis Public Schools. Following the birth of her sons, she enjoyed substitute teaching. The family made their home in Loomis until the Spring of 1965 when they purchased the site of the former Bunker Hill School west of Holdrege and Bunker Hill Farms was established. Sharon will be remembered for her love of organizing and hosting family reunions, parties and social gatherings. First and foremost in her life was caring for her family; she especially loved the time spent with her grandchildren. Sharon was the type of person that enjoyed giving much more than receiving. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, tending to her yard and flowers and refinishing antiques. Sharon loved being part of the "Caper Club," which was a group of friends that enjoyed traveling together.
She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was active with the United Methodist Women. Sharon was also a member of the Arbutus Bridge Club and enjoyed the friendship bonds formed in her Monday morning coffee group.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Bill; two sons: Brian Johnson and his wife, Julie and Blake Johnson and wife, Holly all of Holdrege; six grandchildren: Ethan, Justine, Jeremiah, and Grady, Quinn, and Jett; brothers and sister: George McNiel of Holdrege, Janet Sarbou and her husband, Gene of Rochester, New York, Doug McNiel PhD, of Sulphur, Louisiana; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law and grandparents.
