Shirley Catherine Nyberg, 87 years of age, of Holdrege, formerly of Loomis, passed away on July 24, 2025, at Holdrege Memorial Homes in Holdrege. Shirley was born near Blair, Nebraska, on September 29, 1937, the second of four children, born to Joe and Olga (Schriefer) Fryman. She received her education through the 8th grade at Cumming City Public School and later attended and graduated from Blair High School, with the class of 1954. Shirley pursued higher education at Wayne State College from 1954 to 1956 to receive her Teacher's Certificate. She went on to receive her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Kearney State College.

Shirley and her sister moved to Holdrege to teach school, and it was here that she met the love of her life. On June 19, 1960, Shirley Fryman was united in marriage to John Carl Nyberg at the Blair Methodist Church in Blair, and to this union, two sons were born: Wade and Brett. Shirley taught 4 years in Holdrege and 32 years in Loomis, having the privilege of teaching both sons during their 3rd-grade year.

She enjoyed reading, sewing, and doing puzzles, especially on the computer or tablet. Shirley loved music, and it was very influential in her life, especially while growing up.

She was a member of the Loomis Methodist Church and later transferred her membership to the Evangelical Free Church in Loomis. She was the treasurer for the Evangelical Free Church for 16 years, sang in the church choir, and helped with the Adventure Club youth group on Wednesday nights.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Nyberg; one son, Wade Nyberg; one brother, Joseph Fryman; one sister in infancy, Joyce Fryman; two brothers-in-law, John Greene; Mark Nyberg; and four sisters-in-law: Dona Spence; Marcia Lindstrom and her husband, Lewis; Jean Rummel and her husband, Carl; and Carol Veeh and her husband, Ron.

Shirley is survived by one son, Brett Nyberg and his wife, Loy of Bertrand, Nebraska; one daughter-in-law, Kori Johnson and her husband, Arlan of St. Paul, Nebraska; five grandchildren: Brandon Nyberg; Madison Horak and her husband, Matt; Gunnar Nyberg; Dirk Trautman and his wife, Kami; Kylee Wilken and her husband, Matt; nine great-grandchildren: Brenly and Kendyl Trautman; Westin, Macrae, and Oaklee Wilken; Howard, Theodore, Maxwell, and Augustus Horak; one sister, Joan Greene of Great Falls, Montana; one sister-in-law, Tammy Fryman; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
