Shirley Mae Van Cura, 75 years of age, of Lexington, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at her home in Lexington following a courageous battle with cancer. Shirley was born August 12, 1939 at Ogallala, Nebraska, the second of five children born to Glenn and Iris (Ellison) Finn. Shirley grew up in Arthur, Nebraska. She received her education from Arthur County Public Schools and graduated from Arthur County High School with the class of 1958.
On May 6, 1960 she was united in marriage to Babe R. Van Cura in Arthur and to this union four children were born: Randy, Corrine, Scott, and Marla. The family resided in Arthur and Ogallala, Nebraska until 1976 when they began to make their home in Lexington.
When their children were young, Shirley focused her efforts on being a homemaker and raising the kids. She was also employed by the Tenneco Company, also known as Monroes in Cozad, Nebraska for twenty-five years until her retirement. Following retirement she was employed by Lexington Public Schools and Park Avenue Estates for several years.
Shirley and Babe were members of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and she enjoyed spending her spare time sewing and quilting. Shirley also had a true passion for genealogy and most of all she loved the time spent with her family.
On June 6, 2013 she was preceded in death by her husband, Babe. At the time of his passing the couple had been married for 53 years.
Besides her parents and husband; Shirley was preceded in death by brother, Darwin Finn; sister, Darlene Conn; and brothers-in-law: Henry Van Cura, Jr. and Charles Van Cura.
Shirley leaves to celebrate her life; her two sons: Randy Van Cura of Logandale, Nevada and Scott Van Cura of Lexington; two daughters: Corrine Adams and her husband, Ed of Garden City, Kansas and Marla Arp and her husband, Scott of Bertrand, Nebraska; eight grandchildren: Nicholas Van Cura and his wife, Carrie, Nathan Van Cura, Jason Adams and his wife, Amanda, Ashley Adams, Kayla Arp, Alyssa Arp, Matthew Adams, and Diana Arp; two great-grandchildren: Mara Van Cura and Benjamin Adams; two brothers: Gary Finn and his wife, Mary of Sutherland, Nebraska and Harry Finn and his wife, Loida of Spring Valley, California; brother-in-law, Delmar Van Cura and his wife, Deanna of Ogallala, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Betty Davis of South Barre, Vermont, Charlotte Van Cura of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Jean Van Cura of Paxton, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held prior to the service on Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. – Noon at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington.
A memorial has been established in Shirley's honor and kindly suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
