A Graveside Service and Inurnment for Stuart J. Osborn will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the Highland Cemetery in Bertrand, Nebraska with Rev. Sylvia High Karlsson officiating.

Stuart Jean "Stu" Osborn, 70 years of age, of Bertrand, died on Friday, December 24, 2021, at his home in Bertrand.  Stu was born on July 26, 1951, in Lexington, Nebraska, the only child of Arnold J. and Helen (Balo) Osborn. He attended and graduated from Bertrand Community School in 1969. He then pursued higher education at Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska, where he studied journalism.

Stu's mother and grandparents, who were natives of Hungary, fled to France as their country was divided up after World War I.  During the Second World War, they endured the Nazi occupation of France.  His parents met when his father was stationed in Paris as a GI.  After that his mother and grandparents came as refugees to the United States.  They were proud Stuart was a United States citizen.  In Stu's home, several languages were spoken, and he learned the importance of education and learning.

In 1971, Stu was inducted into the United States Army National Guard and proudly served until his honorable discharge in 1977.  He served as a Tank Commander.

Stu made his home in Bertrand, where he was employed as a journalist at the Lexington Clipper-Herald and the Bertrand Herald.  He also was a radio broadcast announcer for KUVR in Holdrege. In 2004, Stu became the secretary for the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.  As a teenager at Immanuel, he learned to play guitar and joined with Pastor Bruce Berggren and four girls (Gwen Peterson, Maria Morrison, Ramona & Rebecca Peterson), to create a singing group called "The Harvesters."  They sang folk songs and Christian music popular in the 1960s, and traveled around Nebraska, Kansas and into Colorado to perform at church conferences and events.  Later, at Midland College, he lived part of the time with Pastor Bruce and Joan Berggren who were then pastoring a church near Fremont.

In his journalism career, he made many friends, took care to get photographs documented with properly spelled names, (not an easy task), and had a great sense of humor with other newspapermen and women.  Many in the Bertrand area will remember that for a few years Stu wrote the interesting columns on the 'history' of Bertrand before the local newspaper went out of business.

Stu enjoyed reading and spending time with his friends.  His beloved companions in recent years were his dogs, Mutsy and Baby.

Stuart was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, and he has no living relatives.  His memory lives on through his many friends.

There will be no visitation or memorial book signing. Stu's expressed wish for cremation has been honored.  A memorial has been established in Stu's honor, and contributions are received at the First State Bank in Bertrand.

Expressions of caring and kindness can be sent to his friends through the website at www.nelsonbauerfh.com .

The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge of the arrangements .
