A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Vearl Schroder will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Holdrege Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska, with Pastor Brad Perry and Pastor Scott Guthrie officiating. A private inurnment will be held prior to the Celebration of Life at Prairie Home Cemetery, Holdrege.
Vearl Mae (Johnson) Schroder, 95 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026, at Holdrege Memorial Homes in Holdrege. Vearl was born on May 18, 1931, in Holdrege, the fourth of five children, born to C.A. Leslie and Bessie Anna Adelle (Johnson) Johnson. Vearl grew up on the family farm 8 miles north of Holdrege, in Phelps County. She received her primary education from Phelps County District #45 School and then attended Holdrege High School, graduating with the Class of 1948. She then pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska and graduated as a Diploma Nurse in 1951. Following her graduation, Vearl worked in Omaha for one year and then in Kearney for two years.
On October 4, 1953, Vearl was united in marriage to Dewitt "Dewey" Schroder at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege. She worked at the Brewster Hospital for 13 years and then Phelps Memorial Health Center for another 28 years. Following her retirement, Vearl worked at Holdrege Memorial Homes until 2006.
Vearl and Dewey were blessed with four children: Marian, Kent, Kevin, and Michael. Together the family enjoyed camping, fishing, boating and traveling on many family vacations.
In her free time, Vearl enjoyed reading, embroidery projects, and traveling. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and a past member of AORN – the Association of Operating Room Nurses.
Vearl was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dewey; a son, Kent in 1987; her siblings: Zola Maul and her three husbands: Warner Dahlgren, Don Farrell, and Emmett Maul, Sr.; Carol Guthrie and husband, Jack; Laverne Johnson and his wife, Pauline; and Quinten Johnson and his wife, Marilyn; a daughter-in-law Janeal Schroder; and a nephew, Robert Johnson.
Vearl leaves to celebrate her life, her children: Marian Brown of Grand Island, Nebraska; Kevin Schroder of Minden, Nebraska; and Michael Schroder and partner, Carol Cash of Holdrege; eight grandchildren: Heather, Sheena, Adam, William, Tasha, Clynt, Ross, and Zerron; twenty great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, and friends.
There will not be a visitation, viewing or memorial book signing the evening prior to the service. Cremation was chosen.
