Memorial Mass for Vincent A. Colgan will be conducted from the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Thomas Lux officiating. Interment will be in the Alma Cemetery in Alma, Nebraska prior to the Mass at the church at 10:30 a.m.
Vincent Anthony Colgan, 91 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2015 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Vincent was born August 27, 1923, north of Alma, in Harlan County, Nebraska on the family farm, the youngest of four children born to Edward Vincent and Angela Rose (Rooney) Colgan. He received his primary education at Huntley Public Schools and graduated from Huntley High School with the class of 1941. Following graduation, he pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln studying Agriculture.
On April 12, 1944, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Jean Kaup at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orleans, Nebraska. They were blessed with five children: John, James, Jean, Michael and Lucinda Rose.
Vincent had a deep passion in agriculture and pursued a career in farming in Harlan County. In 1956, he began a lifetime career as a soil conservation technician for Phelps County Soil Conservation Services and in 1989, retired after 33 years of service.
Vincent was a long-time member of the All Saints Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served in many capacities. He was a member of the Lions Club in Holdrege, and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for his dedicated service to the Lions Club and was twice honored as Lions Club member of the year. Vince was also a member of the United Commercial Travelers, Holdrege Memorial Homes Auxiliary, the Lexington Chapter of Compassionate Friends and loved volunteering within the community.
On April 12, 2014, Vincent and Phyllis celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. Their commitment to each one another, and to the well-being of others, is an inspiration to all.
Besides his parents, Vince was preceded in death by one son, Mike Colgan; brother, Virgil Colgan; and two sisters: Regina Feeley and Cecilia Morin.
He leaves to mourn his passing; his loving wife, Phyllis Colgan of Holdrege; two sons: John Colgan and his wife, Susan of Parker, Colorado and Jim Colgan and his wife, Betsy of West Sacramento, California; two daughters: Jean Phillips of Charlotte, North Carolina and Cindy Potthoff and her husband, David of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Colgan of Lawrence, Kansas; 17 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 13, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege. Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established in Vince's honor and kindly suggested to the All Saints Catholic School or the Holdrege Lions Club.
