Funeral Services for Walter H. Varwig will be conducted from the United Methodist Church in Oxford, Nebraska on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Robert E. Berlie, Sr., officiating. Interment will be in the Oxford Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Oxford Veteran's Organization in conjunction with the U.S. Army National Guard Honors Team.
Walter Harman Varwig, 87 years of age, of Thornton, Colorado (formerly of Holdrege and Oxford), passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at the Alpine Living Center in Thornton. He was born July 3, 1921 at Agra, Kansas, the eldest of four children born to Henry Alfred and Lena (Scheper) Varwig. He received his primary and secondary education in Alma, Nebraska.
Following his education, Walter was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 8, 1941, serving in WWII until he was honorably discharged from the service on November 4, 1944. Walter began his life career as a truck driver and throughout the years he drove for different businesses, including C.A. Swanson, Sunglow Dairy, Kitty Clover, Sawyer Sand & Gravel and Speedway Trucking.
On September 8, 1942 in Phillipsburg, Kansas he was united in marriage to Wilma Althea Adden and to this union three children were born: Linda, Michael and Donald. The family made their home in Oxford for many years before moving to Holdrege in 1979. The couple moved to North Platte for a brief time before returning to Holdrege where they resided until Wilma's passing on March 20, 2003. Following the death of his wife, Walter moved to Thornton, Colorado to be near his son.
Walter was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled Veterans of America and the Methodist Church. He loved Nebraska Football, enjoyed baseball, dancing and loved his pets.
Walter leaves to mourn his passing his daughter, Linda Morse and her husband, Dick of Monroe, Michigan; sons: Mick Varwig of Racine, Wisconsin and Don Varwig and his wife, Cheryl of Aurora, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Alf Varwig and his wife, Grace of Bartlett, Kansas; sister-in-law, Helen Kuck of Orleans, Nebraska; two brothers-in-law: Dale Adden of Hemet, California and Pete Adden and his wife, Charlene of Lincoln, Nebraska and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides his parents and wife, Wilma, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Harold and Ervin Varwig.
Walter will lie in state at the Mitchell-Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Oxford on Friday, April 3, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to the Disabled Veterans of America.
