Graveside Services for William L. Baker will be conducted at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Thomas Lux, officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Martin Horn American Legion Post #66 of Holdrege in conjunction with the U.S. Army National Guard Honors Team.
William Leaf "Bill" Baker, 92 years of age, passed to the Lord in his sleep at his residence in Harding Guest Home in Carlsbad, California on August 10, 2009. He was born in Holdrege on January 19, 1917 to William A. "Bud" and Anna C. (Leaf) Baker. He received his education from Holdrege, graduating from the Holdrege High School with the class of 1935.
In 1937, Bill was united in marriage to Mary Charlene Conrad and to this union two sons were born: John "Jack" W. and James L. Baker.
Bill was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 5, 1945 and continued his service to his country for a total of 26 years in the U.S. Army, Nebraska National Guard and Army Reserves. He retired from military service in 1982 with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a charter member of Company B, 128th Engineers, Nebraska National Guard.
He was a member of St. Agnes Parish in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Martin Horn American Legion Post #66 in Holdrege, VFW Post #1652 in McCook, Nebraska and the Elks Lodge #1367 in Scottsbluff.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene and son, Jack.
He leaves to mourn his passing his son, Jim Baker and his wife, Mary of Oceanside, California; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Visitation and Rosary will be held at Allen Brothers Mortuary in Vista, California on August 20, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on August 21, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the
St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Oceanside, California.
A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to donor's choice.
