Funeral Services for William A. Sellwood, Jr. will be conducted from the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. with Reverend Kenton Birtell, officiating. Interment will be in the City View Cemetery at Salem, Oregon.
William Alvi Sellwood, Jr., 92 years of age, of Salem, passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at his granddaughter's home in Axtell, Nebraska. William was born January 10, 1918 at Tacoma, Washington, the second of four children of William A. Sellwood, Sr. and Estelle Lydia (Coss) Sellwood. He received his education at Milwaukee, Oregon. Following his education, Bill was employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the depression, where he assisted with the construction of bridges and roads. He then attended the Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon and the University of Wisconsin.
On December 29, 1941, Bill was inducted into the United States Marine Corps 1st Division, serving his country during WWII on Guadal Canal, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands and Tsing Tao in China. On January 16, 1946, he was honorably discharged and returned home to the States.
On October 18, 1947 he was united in marriage to EllaMarie Johnson and to this union one daughter, Eline Patricia was born. The family made their home in Salem, where Bill was employed by the Oregon Highway Department as a supervisor until his retirement following 40 years of service. On July 18, 1993 he was preceded in death by his wife, EllaMarie. Due to his declining health, he moved to Axtell, where he resided with his granddaughter, Maria Ritter for loving care prior to his passing.
Bill enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, spending time with his grandkids, and was always interested in history.
He leaves to mourn his passing his daughter, Eline Graham and her husband, James of Salem, Oregon; three grandchildren: Maria Ritter and her fiancé, Kevin Schepler of Axtell, Jim Graham and his finance, Allison Hodam of Albany, Oregon and Julie Graham of Salem; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Pat Blake of Portland, Oregon; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides his wife, EllaMarie and his parents, Bill was preceded in death by one sister, Rosalie Holthouse; and one brother, Donald Sellwood.
A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to the American Cancer Society.
